Association between types of modic changes in the lumbar region and low back pain in a large cohort: The Wakayama spine study
European Spine Journal Apr 06, 2021
Mera Y, Teraguchi M, Hashizume H, et al. - In this study, the relationship between Modic changes and low back pain (LBP) after adjustment for confounding factors was explored. Participants in the second Wakayama Spine Study were assessed. Researchers measured the prevalence of the types of Modic change in the lumbar region and at each level. The relationship between the types of Modic changes and LBP with adjustment for age, gender, body mass index, disc degeneration score, and disc displacement score was ascertained by performing multivariate logistic regression analysis. They further compared LBP intensity according to the Visual Analogue Scale score among the three types of Modic change. A total of 814 individuals were included in the study. It has been reported that in the lumbar region, type I Modic changes are significantly correlated with LBP. The results considered that profiling Modic changes may be helpful to improve targeted treatment of LBP.
