Association between treatment of superficial bladder cancer and 10-year mortality in older adults with multiple chronic conditions
Cancer Oct 11, 2018
Garg T, et al. – Investigators assessed the link between treatment of superficial bladder cancer (SBC) and 10-year mortality in medically complex older adults. Study participants included 1,800 older (aged ≥ 60 years) patients with SBC (American Joint Committee on Cancer stage ≤ I) from two community-based health systems who received treatment (bladder instillation and/or transurethral resection) or observation. Adjusting for age, sex, race, health system, stage of disease/grade, and multiple chronic conditions (≥ 2 baseline chronic conditions), Cox proportional hazards regression was used for analysis. The researchers found a clinically meaningful association of cancer treatment with survival benefit, even after adjustment for medical complexity, in this patient population.
