Association between the use of social media and photograph editing applications, self-esteem, and cosmetic surgery acceptance
JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery Sep 26, 2019
Chen J, Ishii M, Bater KL, et al. - Researchers examined if the use of social media and photograph editing applications influences self-esteem, and attitudes toward cosmetic surgery. In this population-based survey study, they administered a web-based survey through online platforms to 252 participants. They observed increased consideration of cosmetic surgery among those who showed increased investment in the use of social media platforms. Use of specific applications, such as YouTube, Tinder, and Snapchat photograph filters, was correlated with an increased acceptance of cosmetic surgery; use of other applications, including WhatsApp and Photoshop, was linked with significantly lower self-esteem scores. Findings thereby suggest that social media and photograph editing application use influence the perceptions of cosmetic surgery.
