Association between the use of antidepressants and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus: A large, population-based cohort study in Japan
Diabetes Care Feb 20, 2020
Miidera H, et al. - Researchers undertook this large-scale retrospective cohort analysis in Japan, to examine the links between the risk of new-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus and the duration of antidepressant use and the antidepressant dose, and between antidepressant use following diabetes incipience and clinical results. This study included an exposure group comprising new users of antidepressants and a nonexposure group including nonusers. The participants aged 20–79 years. Those reporting a history of diabetes mellitus or receipt of antidiabetes treatment were eliminated from the study. Findings revealed a time- and dose-dependent rise in the risk of type 2 diabetes onset in correlation with long-term antidepressant use. Following the discontinuation of antidepressants or the reduction of the dose post-diabetes onset, improvement in glucose tolerance was evident.
