Sutton SS, et al. - As influenza patients at high risk for bacterial complications may receive an antibiotic prescription from clinicians, researchers here examined if antibiotics, antivirals, and hospitalization are associated among influenza patients. The VA Informatics and Computing Infrastructure (January 2011-January 2019) yielded data from 12,806 influenza cases; mostly white males and mean age between 57 and 60 years. The risk of hospitalization within 30 days was lower among cases prescribed an antiviral, antibiotic, or both compared with those without therapy. Moreover, a lower risk of respiratory hospitalization within 30 days was observed in correlation to intervention with both an antibiotic and antiviral compared with an antiviral alone. Importantly, with antibiotic + antiviral therapy, only a small absolute magnitude of reduced risk was reported and this must be defined within the context of the overall risk of antibiotic usage.
