Association between symptom duration and patient-reported outcomes before and after hip replacement surgery
Arthritis Care & Research Mar 21, 2019
Lau YS, et al. - In England between 2009 and 2016, investigators examined 209,192 cases to research over the relationship between symptom span and patient-reported consequences before and after hip replacement surgery. They observed that 14% of individuals with symptoms for less than a year, 11% for longer than 5 years, or 5% for more than 10 years. They recorded better post-surgical pain and function among those with a symptom duration of less than one year as compared to those with 1-5 years of symptom duration in an adjusted model. They suggested increasing duration as a significant predictor of poorer outcome after surgery. Along with it, they noted symptom duration earlier to hip replacement more standardized in England over time.
