Association between subclinical hypothyroidism and depression: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis

BMC Psychiatry Jan 11, 2019

Loh HH, et al. - In this meta-analysis, researchers assessed the association between subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and depression including: the prevalence of depression in SCH (with a sub-analysis of the geriatric cohort), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) level among patients with depression, and the effect of levothyroxine therapy among patients with SCH and coexistent depression. Upon analysis of 12,315 study participants, they noted a higher risk of depression among those with SCH than euthyroid controls. Those in the geriatric cohort with SCH had a 1.7-fold higher risk of depression vs healthy controls. Individuals with depression and healthy controls showed no difference in the mean TSH level. Findings thus emphasized the significance of early and routine screening of depression to prevent morbidity and mortality. However, the authors suggested individualizing the use of levothyroxine among patients with SCH and coexistent depression.
