Association between STI and child sexual exploitation in children under 16 years old attending sexual health clinics in England: Findings from a case-control study
Sexually Transmitted Infections Apr 20, 2019
Ward C, et al. - Researchers examined how sexually transmitted infections (STI) presentation at sexual health clinics (SHCs) is related to child sexual exploitation (CSE). The Genitourinary Medicine Clinic Activity Data Set STI Surveillance System was used to identify SHCs with 18 or more children aged 13–15 years old with STI diagnoses in 2012. Data on 466 children [414 (89%) female] aged 13–15 years old was obtained; 340 (80%) aged 15, 108 (23%) aged 14, and 18 (3.9%) aged 13 years. For CSE, they noted a potential predictive value of presentation with bacterial or protozoal STIs in children aged 13–15 years old at SHCs. Among children under 16 years old presenting with a bacterial or protozoal STI, they suggest considering CSE, indepth assessment and potential referral as reasonable.
