Association between statin use and risk of dementia after a concussion
JAMA May 24, 2019
Redelmeier DA, et al. - Researchers ascertained if an increased or decreased risk of subsequent dementia following a concussion correlated with statin use. This large extended population-based double cohort study identified 28,815 subjects diagnosed as having a concussion, of whom 7,058 received a statin, and 21,757 did not. A decreased risk of dementia related with the use of statin was seen in various patient groups, stayed independent of use of other cardiovascular medication, strengthened over time, was distinguished from the risk of subsequent depression, and was not seen in patients following an ankle sprain. In this analysis, after a concussion, older adults had a considerable long-term risk of dementia, which was linked to a modest decrease in statin patients.
