Association between statin use and all-cause mortality in cancer survivors, based on the Korean Health Insurance Service between 2002 and 2015
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Dec 18, 2019
Kim J, Choi EA, Han YE, et al. - Using data from the 2002 to 2015 National Health Insurance Service-National Health Screening Cohort (NHIS-HEALS), researchers determined whether statin use in cancer survivors was inversely related to all-cause mortality. They estimated the survival function based on statin usage, using Kaplan–Meier estimator. They calculated HRs and 95% CIs for all-cause mortality by employing Cox proportional hazards regression models following stepwise adjustment for potential confounders. A median follow-up of 10.0 years was performed. Both genders demonstrated a higher percentage of diabetes and hypertension in statin users. For all-cause mortality, the HRs (95% CIs) of statin users vs non-users were estimated to be 0.327 (0.194–0.553) in men and 0.287 (0.148–0.560) in women, following adjustment for potential confounding factors. Findings revealed a higher survival rate in statin users vs non-users in both sexes among cancer survivors.
