Association between statin adherence and the risk of stroke among South Korean adults with hyperlipidemia
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Dec 21, 2021
Jeong W, Joo JH, Kim H, et al. - Adherence to statin therapy is recommended for hyperlipidemia patients because a significant association exists between statin adherence and ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke risk.
From the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort, data of 128,052 and 129,390 participants with hyperlipidemia were obtained for examining the risks of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, respectively.
Participants were split into categories by statin adherence, estimated as the proportion of days covered (PDC; poor, moderate, good).
Higher risks of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke were observed in participants with poor PDC vs those with good PDC (ischemic stroke: hazard ratio [HR]=1.09, hemorrhagic stroke: HR=1.37).
A higher risk of ischemic stroke was evident in women with poor PDC vs those with good PDC (HR=1.17), while men with poor PDC had a higher risk of hemorrhagic stroke vs those with good PDC (HR=1.55).
A higher risk of ischemic stroke was found in people with disabilities who had poor PDC vs those with good PDC (HR=1.55).
