Association between state minimum wages and suicide rates in the U.S.
American Journal of Preventive Medicine Mar 27, 2019
Gertner AK, et al. - Via conducting this retrospective study, researchers examined the relationship between state minimum wages and suicide rates in the United States. This link was assessed for all 50 states between 2006 and 2016 via linear regression models with state fixed effects. Throughout the study duration, nearly 432,000 deaths by suicide were reported. On average, a 1.9% decrease in the annual state suicide rate was noted in adjusted analyses in relation to a one-dollar increase in the real minimum wage. This negative link was most uniform in years since 2011. In recent years, slower growth in state suicide rates has been reported in relation to increases in real minimum wages. Increases in suicide rates may be mitigated by increasing the minimum wage.
