Association between sonographically diagnosed nephrolithiasis and subclinical coronary artery calcification in adults
American Journal of Kidney Diseases Aug 24, 2017
Kim S et al. – This cross–sectional study demonstrated the association between nephrolithiasis assessed using ultrasonography of the abdomen and coronary artery calcification (CAC) among 62,091 asymptomatic adults without known coronary heart disease (CHD). Nephrolithiasis was associated with CAC in adults without known CHD sharing a common pathophysiology.
Methods
- Nephrolithiasis assessed using ultrasonography of the abdomen and CAC scoring was assessed using cardiac computed tomography.
Results
- Overall prevalence of CAC score >0 was 13.1%.
- Patients with nephrolithiasis showed higher prevalence of CAC than those without nephrolithiasis (19.1% vs 12.8%).
- After adjusting for various confounding variables, the CAC score ratio of 1.31 was significant.
