Association between socioeconomic factors and outcomes in breast cancer
The Breast Journal Apr 19, 2019
Riba LA, et al. - Using data from the National Cancer Database, researchers performed this retrospective study examining the impact of economic factors on key aspects of breast cancer management. Evaluating a total of 666,487 women, they noted that patients with lower income (OR, 1.23) and no insurance (OR, 1.64) were more frequently diagnosed with later stage disease, had a higher likelihood of undergoing mastectomy instead of breast-conserving therapy, had received immediate breast reconstruction less frequently and had received systemic therapy less frequently. Patients with high income and insurance displayed a survival benefit. A better understanding of these disparities in the delivery of care among patients with limited economic resources may assist in reducing the existing gap in quality of care.
