Association between smoking and in-hospital mortality in patients with left ventricular dysfunction undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery: A propensity-matched study

BMC Cardiovascular Disorders May 15, 2021

Tang H, Hou J, Chen K, et al. - Researchers investigated how smoking can impact coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) patients with left ventricular dysfunction. In this retrospective analysis, they utilized data from the China Heart Failure Surgery Registry database. Participants were eligible patients with left ventricular ejection fraction less than 50% who received isolated CABGS. The study sample (n = 6531) comprised 3,635 smokers and 2,896 non-smokers. Smokers were split into ex-smokers (n = 2,373) and current smokers (n = 1,262). The overall in-hospital morality was estimated to be 3.9%. A paradoxical finding was obtained that lower in-hospital mortality was experienced by current smokers when compared with non-smokers.
