Association between serum prolactin levels and neurodegenerative diseases: Systematic review and meta-analysis

Neuroimmunomodulation Oct 25, 2021

Duc Nguyen H, Hoang NMH, Ko M, et al. - Patients with Huntington’s disease and multiple sclerosis exhibited significantly higher serum prolactin (PRL) levels vs healthy controls. Serum PRL concentrations were related to age, region, and detection method.

  • PRL is thought to have a crucial role in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases (NDs).

  • This systematic review and meta-analysis involved 36 comparisons out of 29 studies (3 RCTs and 26 case controls), to examine serum PRL levels in patients with NDs.

  • Serum PRL levels did not differ statistically significantly between patients with NDs and healthy controls (standard mean difference SMD = 0.40).

  • Higher serum PRL levels were detected in patients with NDs aged <45 years (SMD = 0.97) vs healthy controls.
