Association between sepsis and microvascular brain injury
Critical Care Medicine Oct 18, 2019
Ehlenbach WJ, et al. - In this retrospective cohort analysis, researchers investigated the link between sepsis and cerebral microinfarcts on brain autopsy in a study sample of 529 older adults who participated in a population-based prospective cohort study named Adult Changes in Thought conducted in Kaiser Permanente Washington. At study entry, the participants were greater than or equal to 65 years old without dementia. Findings revealed a specific association of sepsis with moderate to severe vascular brain injury, as evaluated by microvascular infarcts. For microinfarcts within the cerebral cortex, this link was stronger. In adjusted analyses, the likelihood of having evidence of moderate to severe cerebral cortical injury was more than twice in those who experienced severe sepsis hospitalization.
