Association between sarcopenic obesity and falls in a multiethnic cohort of postmenopausal women
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Dec 02, 2018
Follis S, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, researchers investigated if and how sarcopenia, obesity, and sarcopenic obesity are related to the incidence of falls in a racially and ethnically diverse cohort of healthy postmenopausal women. Postmenopausal Women's Health Initiative (WHI) enrollees (aged 50-79 years) who underwent bone and body composition scans using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry at baseline (N=11,020) were examined. The investigators found a high risk of sarcopenic obesity-related fall in women younger than 65 years of age and those age 65 and older in this multiethnic cohort. Sarcopenic obesity posed the highest risk for falls in Hispanic women. To customize fall prevention strategies and reduce public health burden, detection of causal factors and health disparities in sarcopenic obesity was recommended.
