Association between sarcopenia and AFP level in patients undergoing liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma
Journal of Surgical Research Apr 08, 2019
Acosta LF, et al. - As sarcopenia is one of the most common complications of cirrhosis, researchers sought the predictors of sarcopenia in patients undergoing liver transplantation (LT) for early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) that are ineligible for resection. They retrospectively analyzed 163 patients who had transplants at their institution for HCC. Sarcopenia was identified in 61 of these by lumbar skeletal muscle index (LSMI); 53 of these were male (86.9%) with a median age of 59 years (56-64). In patients with HCC undergoing LT, an almost 6-fold increased risk of sarcopenia was linked to alpha-fetoprotein level >100 mg/dL. A 70% increased risk of prolonged length of stay was noted among patients in the lowest quartile of the LSMI.
