Association between reduced renal function and cardiovascular mortality in patients hospitalized with infection: A multi-center cohort study
European Journal of Internal Medicine Jul 02, 2018
Su G, et al. - In patients hospitalized with infection, the association between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and cardiovascular mortality was examined in this multi-center cohort study. Between 2012 and 2015, all adult, incident patients who were hospitalized at one of four hospitals in China, who had a diagnosis of infection at discharge, and who had a serum creatinine measurement at admission were included. Researchers reported that increased risks of cardiovascular mortality were found in patients hospitalized with both infection and reduced renal function. It was noted that the percentage of deaths caused by cardiovascular disease increased as eGFR decreased, mostly due to ischemic heart disease. Therefore, heart status should be carefully monitored following infections, particularly in those with reduced renal function.
