Association between rapid weather changes and incidence of chiefly cardiovascular complaints in the emergency department
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Sep 18, 2019
Ostendorf T, Bernhard M, Hartwig T, et al. - Researchers examined how the weather is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) related visits in emergency departments (ED) using a case-crossover study design. They used patient and weather data from the years 2014 and 2015 for this work. Assessing 20,558 ED visits related to CVD (mean per day: 28.3) during the study period, they identified that rapid weather changes on the day before ED admission are associated with ED visits due to CVD. They observed a slight increase in CVD admissions in correlation with a drop in temperature and an increase or decrease in atmospheric pressure and relative humidity. However, as the observed significant effects were too small, no conclusion could be drawn in terms of ED capacity due to weather changes.
