Association between quantity of opioids prescribed after surgery or preoperative opioid use education with opioid consumption
JAMA Jul 01, 2019
Farley KX, et al. - Experts determined whether decreasing the number of opioid tablets prescription would reduce the postoperative opioid consumption and whether preoperative opioid use knowledge would further help in declining the consumption amount in patients who were prescribed opioid post-surgery since it was correlated with the development of addiction. Via an electronic medical record system, a reduction in the number of opioids prescribed post-surgery was recognized, lowering default opioid prescription quantities. However, no difference could be ascertained in the effect of lessened prescription of the opioid on actual patient opioid consumption. Hence, in reducing the excessive use of postoperative opioid use, patient education could play an important role.
