Association between purpose in life and objective measures of physical function in older adults
JAMA Psychiatry Aug 22, 2017
Kim ES, et al. – The aim of this longitudinal cohort study was to evaluate whether higher purpose in life among adequately functioning older adults is correlated with lower risk of developing weak grip strength and slow walking speed over time. The study showed that purpose in life was prospectively correlated with a lowered risk of developing weak grip strength and slow walking speed, although the findings were more robust for walking speed than for grip strength. The authors suggested that a sense of purpose in life, a modifiable factor, might play an important role in maintaining physical function among older adults.
