Association between pulmonary function and asthma symptoms
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Oct 21, 2019
Sullivan PW, et al. - Researchers retrospectively analyzed patients (aged ≥ 12 years) with persistent asthma from the Observational Study of Asthma Control and Outcomes—a managed-care population with persistent asthma—to evaluate the link between FEV1%pred (FEV1 as a percentage of predicted) and Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ) scores. They analyzed 1,748 survey responses with valid spirometry outcomes. In unadjusted models, they identified a weak and statistically insignificant link between FEV1%pred and ACQ-5/ACQ-6 scores, which was indicative of a high degree of unexplained difference between these measures. For evaluating asthma control in clinical care and outcomes studies, the use of both symptoms and pulmonary function instead of one measure alone was supported.
