Association between pretreatment obesity, sarcopenia, and survival in patients with head and neck cancer
Head & Neck Feb 26, 2019
Fattouh M, et al. - In this retrospective analysis, 441 normal-weight, overweight, and obese head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) cases treated at Montefiore Medical Center (New York) were analyzed to study the association of body mass index (BMI), sarcopenia, and obesity-related comorbidities with HNSCC progression. Independent of comorbid conditions, they recorded 55% of HNSCC subjects overweight or obese. They noted significantly better overall survival among overweight/obese candidates in comparison to normal-weight subjects. They noted poor survival in individuals with sarcopenia with the strongest correlation detected among overweight/obese cases.
