Association between preoperative depression and readmission rate following primary total joint arthroplasty: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Journal of Arthroplasty Jun 29, 2021
Kim H, et al. - Via performing this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers sought to evaluate if preoperative depression is associated with the readmission rate following total joint arthroplasty (TJA). Performing systematic searches in MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library, they identified nine studies with 395,815 TJA cases for inclusion. Of these cases, 49,402 were diagnosed with preoperative depression and 346,413 were not. Available evidence suggests correlation of preoperative depression with increases in the readmission rate after TJA, particularly total knee arthroplasty. As depression is a modifiable risk factor, they suggest screening for depression and referring patients for proper psychiatric management as relevant.
