Association between prediabetes (defined by HbA1C, fasting plasma glucose, and impaired glucose tolerance) and the development of chronic kidney disease: A 9-year prospective cohort study
BMC Nephrology Apr 20, 2019
Kim GS, et al. - Using data from the Korea Genome and Epidemiology Study, researchers examined how the development of incident chronic kidney disease (CKD) was influenced by prediabetes among 7728 Korean adults without baseline CKD and type 2 diabetes, followed for a median duration of 8.7 years. Compared to the non-prediabetic group, the development of incident CKD was more frequently seen among patients with prediabetes, as defined by impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or HbA1C. They identified IGT- or HbA1C-defined prediabetes as an independent predictor of incident CKD and early detection of CKD risk might be allowed by measuring these parameters.
