Association between postextubation dysphagia and long-term mortality among critically ill older adults
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Sep 13, 2019
Regala M, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers focused on the link between postextubation dysphagia and 1-year mortality in older patients. They also assessed ICU and hospital lengths of stay, ICU readmission, and place of discharge as secondary outcomes. This inquiry was undertaken from January 1 to December 31, 2013, and included ICU patients, aged 65 years and older, who were successfully extubated. These individuals had a formal swallow assessment by a speech and language pathologist. Findings revealed no link of dysphagia with mortality, ICU and hospital lengths of stay, ICU readmission, and place of discharge among older mechanically ventilated ICU patients who had a swallow evaluation after extubation.
