Association between polycystic ovary syndrome and venous thromboembolism: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Thrombosis Research Jan 16, 2020

Gariani K, et al. - Because polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is very prevalent and commonly treated with prothrombotic combined oral contraceptives (COC), investigators sought to orderly review the available evidence to assess the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) correlated with PCOS, and whether observed increased risks might be explained by a higher prevalence of obesity and hormonal treatments. Two researchers independently searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and conference proceedings (ISTH, WHITH) from inception through 4.2019 for studies reporting the correlation of PCOS with VTE risk, for this systematic review and meta-analysis. They recognized 5 large observational studies published in 2004 and 2018, most commonly utilizing administrative data, set in Denmark, the USA or the United Kingdom. Participants with PCOS had greater risks of VTE contrasted with participants without PCOS in unadjusted analyses. It was found that for VTE, PCOS seems to be a risk factor, independently of its associated excess weight and greater utilization of combined oral contraceptives. Moreover, this shall be taken into account in the pharmacological management of PCOS.
