Association between patient frailty and postoperative mortality across multiple noncardiac surgical specialties
JAMA Jan 16, 2021
George EL, Hall DE, Youk A, et al. - Researchers aimed at ascertaining if the correlation between frailty and postoperative mortality is consistent across noncardiac surgical specialties. They conducted a cohort study of over 2.7 million unique patients across 9 noncardiac specialties in hospitals participating in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) and Veterans Affairs Surgical Quality Improvement Program (VASQIP). Per findings, there exists the correlation between frailty and postoperative mortality across all noncardiac surgical specialties; this correlation was evident independent of operative stress. High mortality rates were reported for frail patients in all surgical specialties following low- and moderate-stress procedures. Based on these findings, they emphasize implementing preoperative frailty assessment across all specialties, irrespective of case-mix, to facilitate risk stratification and shared decision-making.
