Association between pathological invasion patterns and late lymph node metastases in patients with surgically treated clinical N0 early oral tongue carcinoma
Head & Neck Nov 03, 2019
Hori Y, Kubota A, Yokose T, et al. - Researchers examined the prognostic value of the combination of tumor budding and depth (BD model) and worst pattern of invasion (WPOI) in clinical N0 early oral tongue carcinoma. Retrospective analysis of data from 62 patients was performed. They noted 5-year regional control (RC) rates of 74% and disease-free survival (DFS) rates of 65%, respectively. As per the univariate analysis, blood vessel invasion, lymphatic invasion, WPOI, and BD model are predictive factors for RC, whereas multivariate analysis identified WPOI, and BD model as predictive factors for RC. For DFS, lymphatic invasion, WPOI, and BD model were the predictive factors in univariate analysis, whereas WPOI was the predictive factor in multivariate analysis. These findings emphasize to give consideration to the pathological invasion patterns when deciding the follow-up plan for patients with clinical N0 early oral tongue carcinoma.
