Association between parental medical claims for opioid prescriptions and risk of suicide attempt by their children
JAMA May 28, 2019
Brent DA, et al. - Researchers conducted this pharmacoepidemiologic study to investigate if there is an association between parental prescription opioid use and the growing rate of youth suicide. Participants in the study were 148,395 children of parents who did not use opioids and 184,142 children of parents who used opioids (>1 year of filled prescriptions). Investigators found that opioid parental use was associated with a doubling of their offspring's risk of a suicide attempt. Findings suggested that children of parents who use opioids can be at increased risk for attempted suicide, which can contribute to the trend in adolescent suicide. In this study, parental use of opioids doubled the risk of a suicide attempt in their offspring.
