Association between osteoarthritis and social isolation: Data from the EPOSA study

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Jan 16, 2020

Siviero P, Veronese N, Smith T, et al. - By performing this prospective, observational analysis with 12 to 18 months of follow-up, utilizing data from the European Project on OSteoArthritis (EPOSA) study, researchers investigated if osteoarthritis (OA) is related to incident social isolation. Participants were older people residing in six European countries. The evaluation of social isolation was done utilizing the Lubben Social Network Scale and the Maastricht Social Participation Profile. Findings revealed an increased risk of social isolation in correlation with the presence of clinical OA in one or two sites of the hip and knee, or in two or three sites of the hip, knee, and hand; this was noted after adjusting for cognitive impairment and depression and worse walking times. Awareness among clinicians regarding the possible greater risk of social isolation in people with OA is recommended.
