Association between obesity/overweight and functional gastrointestinal disorders in children
Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology Mar 29, 2019
Tambucci R, et al. - In the present observational, case-control study, researchers evaluated the prevalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in obese/overweight children vs normal-weight peers. For this investigation, they enrolled consecutive obese and overweight children (aged 4 to 18 years) attending the obesity outpatient clinic as study cases. An association was found between excess body fat and FGIDs in children. This finding might offer a patient model in which the effects of food and nutrients, the gut microbial environment, and psychosocial factors fit well with the emerging biopsychosocial conceptual model for FGIDs.
