Association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and reduced bone mineral density in children: A meta-analysis
Hepatology Mar 27, 2019
Mantovani A, et al. - Researchers carried out a meta-analysis using random-effects modelling to determine the association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and reduced bone mineral density (BMD) in children. From January 2000 to September 2018, publication databases were searched using predefined keywords to identify applicable observational studies carried out in children or adolescents in which NAFLD was diagnosed either by imaging or by histology, and BMD Z score was calculated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. In children and adolescents, the presence and severity of NAFLD was significantly related to reduced whole-body BMD Z scores. The observational design of the included studies does not, however, allow proof of causality.
