Association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and reduced bone mineral density in children: A meta-analysis

Mantovani A, et al. - In this investigation, researchers conducted a meta-analysis using random-effects modeling to determine the connection between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and reduced bone mineral density (BMD) in children. From January 2000 to September 2018, publication databases were searched using predefined keywords to identify applicable observational studies carried out in children or adolescents in which NAFLD was diagnosed either by imaging or by histology, and BMD Z score was calculated by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. In children and adolescents, the presence and severity of NAFLD was significantly linked to reduced whole-body BMD Z scores. However, the observational design of the included studies does not permit proof of causality.
