Association between nonadherence to cardiovascular risk factor medications after breast cancer diagnosis and incidence of cardiac events
Cancer Jan 29, 2020
Hershman DL, Accordino MK, Shen S, et al. - Using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results –Medicare database, researchers assessed cardiovascular events in breast cancer (BC) survivors in relation to nonadherence to cardiovascular disease risk factor (CVD-RF) medications. The patients included had stages I to III BC and had Medicare part D coverage and were receiving at least 1 CVD-RF medication before their BC diagnosis (2008-2013). Overall 15,576 patients were examined, of those, nonadherence to at least 1 category following the initial BC treatment period was reported in 4,797 (30.8%). The factors that displayed a link with nonadherence were: black race, greater comorbidity burden, more advanced cancer stage, hormone receptor–negative status, and receipt of chemotherapy. An increased risk of a cardiac event was observed in relation to nonadherence to CVD-RF medications following treatment of BC. Focus on non-BC conditions is needed to improve results and decrease morbidity following a diagnosis of BC.
