Association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and risk of atrial fibrillation in adult individuals: An updated meta-analysis
Liver International Mar 21, 2019
Mantovani A, et al. - In 364,919 adult individuals, researchers explored the link between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and risk of atrial fibrillation (AF). Meta-analysis of data from five cross-sectional studies revealed that, regardless of age, sex, body mass index, hypertension and other common risk factors for AF, NAFLD was related to an increased risk of prevalent AF. In patients with established diabetes this risk was especially increased. Findings suggested an association of NAFLD with an increased risk of AF in middle-aged and elderly people (particularly in those with type 2 diabetes), though the eligible studies' observational design does not allow proof of causality.
