Association between nasal obstruction symptoms and anxiety
ENT Journal Feb 23, 2020
Akkoca O, et al. - Researchers sought to determine whether and how nasal function assessment is associated with anxiety scales. They assessed a total of 120 patients with the complaint of nasal obstruction and a control group comprising of 57 healthy participants. Patients with the complaint of nasal obstruction were classified as nasal septum deviation group (DNS) and no nasal pathology group (NON). Assessment of nasal obstruction severity was done utilizing the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation scale, nasal resistance level using rhinomanometry and anxiety levels with the Agoraphobic Cognitions Questionnaire, and the Body Sensations Questionnaire. Results indicate that patients with nasal breathing complaints, but no organic pathology, had the equivalent level of nasal obstruction symptoms as patients with nasal septal deviations. The DNS group exhibited higher total nasal resistance values compared with both the NON and control groups, although the difference between the NON group and control group was not statistically significant. Patients with symptoms of nasal obstruction exhibited elevated anxiety levels, even when there is a lack of organic nasal pathology.
