Association between mineral and bone disorder in patients with acute kidney injury following cardiac surgery and adverse outcomes

BMC Nephrology Oct 23, 2019

Yang T, Wang W, Tang X, et al. - Among 158 patients who underwent cardiac surgery and developed acute kidney injury (AKI), researchers inquired about dysregulated mineral and bone metabolism in AKI. Among participants, they assessed the link between mineral and bone metabolites and clinical consequences. They recorded the baseline features of the patients, and assessed the levels of mineral and bone metabolites, including calcium, phosphate, intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), 25-hydroxyvitamin D, bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b and C-terminal fibroblast growth factor 23 (cFGF23) within 12 h following ascertaining the clinical diagnosis. They found a significant association of serum phosphate, iPTH and cFGF23 levels with 28-day mortality. Independent links of higher serum cFGF23 and BAP levels with an increased risk of adverse outcomes were observed. In this study, dysregulation of mineral and bone metabolites, as well as their relation with adverse clinical outcomes, was observed in patients with AKI.
