Association between mental health disorders and mortality among patients with COVID-19 in 7 countries: A systematic review and meta-analysis
JAMA Nov 09, 2021
Fond G, Nemani K, Etchecopar-Etchart D, et al. - Researchers examined the risk of COVID-19 mortality among patients with vs without mental health disorders.
A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Searching MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, researchers identified 16 observational studies in 7 countries with 19,086 patients for inclusion.
According to both pooled crude and adjusted odds ratios, patients with mental health disorders are at elevated risk of COVID-19 mortality.
The highest odds ratios were recorded for patients with severe mental health disorders.
Based on the findings, researchers recommend targeting patients with COVID-19 and mental health disorders as a high-risk population for severe forms of COVID-19, requiring enhanced preventive and disease management strategies.
