JAMA Psychiatry Nov 06, 2021
Fond G, Nemani K, Etchecopar-Etchart D, et al. - Risk of COVID-19 mortality was compared between patients with vs without mental health disorders.
Performing a search in MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 16 observational studies in 7 countries with 19,086 patients.
According to both pooled crude and adjusted odds ratios, there appeared increased COVID-19 mortality in correlation with mental health disorders.
The highest odds ratios were generated for patients with severe mental health disorders.
Based on these findings, researchers recommended targeting patients with COVID-19 and mental health disorders as a high-risk population for severe forms of COVID-19, requiring increased preventive and disease management strategies.
