Association between Medicare’s Mandatory Joint Replacement Bundled Payment Program and postacute care use in Medicare advantage
JAMA Oct 11, 2019
Wilcock AD, et al. - Researchers determined the correlation between Medicare’s Mandatory Joint Replacement Bundled Payment Program and postacute care use in Medicare benefit. Under bundled payment programs, like Medicare’s Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement model, for beneficiaries in traditional fee-for-service Medicare, hospitals endured financial risk for posthospitalization care. It was not known whether involved hospitals altered care patterns only for individuals who were subjected to the payment bundle or whether variations spilled over onto care for other individuals who underwent joint replacement. Spillovers to Medicare Advantage people would intimate that clinicians have a constant approach to discharge planning irrespective of the payor and would recommend that Medicare’s payment reforms have had a wider societal impact.
