Association between maternal iodine intake in pregnancy and childhood neurodevelopment at age 18 months
American Journal of Epidemiology Nov 23, 2018
Zhou SJ, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, researchers assessed the link between maternal iodine intake in pregnancy and childhood neurodevelopment in 699 children at 18 months. They performed this investigation in Australia between 2011 and 2015, and used Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (Bayley-III) for assessing neurodevelopment. At study entry (<20 weeks’ gestation) and at 28 weeks’ gestation, evaluations were performed for maternal iodine intake and urinary iodine concentration (UIC). According to findings, poorer childhood neurodevelopment was observed in relation to both low and high iodine intakes in pregnancy in this iodine-sufficient population.
