Association between malnutrition and outcomes in patients with severe ischemic stroke undergoing rehabilitation
Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Feb 01, 2020
Scrutinio D, et al. - Researchers designed a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the incremental prognostic significance of malnutrition in individuals with severe post-stroke disability. A total of 668 individuals with ischemic stroke admitted to inpatient rehabilitation within 90 days from stroke occurrence and listed as Case-Mix Groups 0108, 0109, and 0110 of the current Medicare case-mix classification system. Using the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), Nutritional status was measured, which is estimated from serum albumin and total lymphocyte count. Using multivariable regression analyses, the relationship of PNI categories with outcomes was evaluated. Severe malnutrition was presented about 1 in every 9 individuals. It was recorded that severe malnutrition did not provide additional prognostic information concerning the risk of the combined outcome or 2-year mortality, on top of the independent predictors.
