Jin T, et al. - A quantitative appraisal was conducted of the level of risk of prostate cancer (PC) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in individuals with baldness. A connection was established between the male pattern baldness (MPB) with an increased risk of PC and BPH. In order to better elucidate these correlations and to advance knowledge in this field, additional studies were required.

Methods

• A systematic literature search was performed via several databases.
• The pooled odds ratios (OR) and 95% CIs were estimated during this study.

Results

• 17 studies involving 68,448 candidates were selected.
• MPB displayed a connection with an increased risk of aggressive PC (OR=1.59; 95% CI: 1.36-1.86; P < 0.001) as well as BPH (OR=1.26; 95% CI: 1.05-1.51; P=0.01).
• Statistically prominent correlation was found between vertex baldness and PC (OR=1.18; 95% CI: 1.05-1.32; P=0.006).
• No statistically marked link was reported between the vertex, frontal plus vertex hair loss pattern, and BPH.
