Association between life-course obesity and frailty in older adults: Findings in the GAZEL cohort
Obesity Feb 05, 2020
Landré B, et al. - Researchers sought to determine how weight history during adulthood influence frailty in late life in men and women participating in the GAZEL (GAZ and ELectricité) cohort. In this cohort study, a follow up of 8,751 men and 3,033 women (aged 61 to 76 years) was performed since 1989. Among men, obesity was reported in 12%, severe obesity in 1.8%, and morbid obesity in 0.4% in 2015; for women, these percentages were 11%, 2.2%, and 0.8%, respectively. Outcomes revealed a higher likelihood of being frail among individuals with obesity than those with normal BMI; the risk of frailty progressed with each additional year of obesity. They suggest the benefits of early weight management in old age.
