Association between left ventricular ejection fraction, wall motion abnormality, and embolic stroke of undetermined source

Journal of the American Heart Association May 10, 2019

Ramasamy S, et al. - In this retrospective, cross-sectional study, researchers investigated if left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (LVEF) or LV wall motion abnormality was related to embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) in patients with acute ischemic stroke enrolled in the CAESAR (Cornell Acute Stroke Academic Registry). They included patients with small- and large-artery ischemic strokes as controls (n=382). To be defined as ESUS, LVEF above 35% was required (n=503). Excluding patients with ESUS with any evidence of ipsilateral carotid atherosclerosis, they undertook a secondary analysis. Findings revealed that LVEF or LV wall motion abnormality was not related to ESUS across the entire cohort; however, a link was observed between lower LVEF and ESUS after the exclusion of ESUS patients with any evidence of ipsilateral carotid atherosclerosis.
