Association between intrapartum epidural use and maternal postpartum depression presenting for medical care: A population-based, matched cohort study
International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesia May 09, 2018
Wu Y, et al. - Researchers investigated if intrapartum epidural use is related to maternal postpartum depression presenting for medical care in this study including all adult nulliparous women in Ontario, Canada from 2006 to 2012 without a history of depression, who had a term vaginal delivery. They matched (1:1) a total of 40,303 women who received an intrapartum epidural on age, year of cohort entry, and propensity score to an equal number of women who did not receive an intrapartum epidural. Within 12 months postpartum, 0.88% was noted to be the overall rate of new onset depression presenting to the healthcare system. Findings showed no association of intrapartum epidural use with maternal postpartum depression presenting to the healthcare system in these subjects.
