Association between interpersonal trust and suicidal ideation in older adults: A cross-sectional analysis of 7070 subjects in Shandong, China
BMC Psychiatry Jul 13, 2019
Yu Z, et al. - In order to examine the relationship between interpersonal trust and suicidal ideation among older adults in China, researchers interviewed 7,070 older adults aged 60 and above from Shandong Province, China to obtain information regarding their socio-demographic characteristics, health status, family relationship, psychological distress, interpersonal trust, and suicidal ideation in the last 12 months. Suicidal ideation in the past 12 months was reported by 7.1% of participants. Correlation of interpersonal mistrust with twice the odds of suicidal ideation, when compared to interpersonal trust, was seen after adjusting for sociodemographic factors, health status, family relationship and psychological distress. These findings support developing intervention approaches inducing and encouraging interpersonal trust to prevent suicide.
